The Challenge

Refresh and update Idaho.gov while migrating all the data to a new platform.

We began our project by reviewing other states and countries websites, and selecting three for a comparative task analysis. We used the top twelve tasks performed on Idaho.gov, and did benchmark tests on our own site, as well as the comparative tests. For each site, we also asked users about their perceived ease of use.

The two primary observed approaches to finding content were scrolling and searching. We updated the homepage to offer better information scent to the larger categories and most popular content automatically (for the scrollers). We also updated the search to be more robust and offer suggestions by category (this functionality is temporarily disabled, as the solution is not compatible with the newest platform version).

Test users preferred homepage designs that included landscapes, rating them as easier to navigate, more enjoyable to use, and more trustworthy.

The jobs page, marriage law and gun law page were particularly popular, as well as many of the interior links you can see pulled forward.
